About the CPS Foundation, a charitable corporation established in 1975 Initially the CPS Foundation was a Memorial and Gift Fund supported by the original Canadian Power Squadron organization for the benefit of its members. Renamed Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons, this volunteer organization has 178 squadrons and over 32,000 members dedicated to safe boating education. Today, the CPS Foundation is a strong, well-established, successful organization, controlled, at arms-length from CPS, by 5 Directors. The objective of the Foundation is to gather and grow its fund to strengthen and guarantee the mission of Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons. Foundation is on course and moving along very nicely. Since its inception, Foundation Directors have more than doubled their starting capital every six years, ie five times While growing from $16,000 to $600,000 they also gifted $160,000 to CPS. Of course, much of the credit for the excellent performance and the success of the mission goes to the members of CPS who have donated to our programs in a very special and generous way. Please look over our programs to learn how you can share in this great opportunity. Visit the Memorial Fund, the Honour Roll and the Affinity Pin Programs. Check out your squadron’s Honour Roll status. Remember, whatever you donate, all donations placed in the capital account stay in the fund forever. Funds provided to CPS are provided from accrued interest. Your Directors appreciate your support and confidence and thank you for the opportunity to serve as the Trustees of your foundation. |

| Guaranteed future education | Guaranteed future education is the main focus and the longer-term goal of the Foundation. Recognizing horizontally opposed time frames, our founders opted for a separate organization. |
|
| Charities Directorate | The Charities Directorate decrees the separation between Foundation and CPS and calculates the minimum amount payable to our benefiting charity based on Foundation’s receipted donations. | |
| Operating | Operating as a repository for memorial gifts, (official receipts available on request), Foundation also solicits other donations, manages a capital account and a conservative investment portfolio. | |
| Management | Management is provided by a Board of five Directors elected from the foundation membership. | |
| Membership | Membership in Foundation is by Director invitation, and normally endorsed by the C/C. of CPS. | |
| Information | Information is provided to supporting Districts, Squadrons and Members via articles appearing in Port Hole and available from this web page or by electronic bulletin at the members’ discretion. | |
| Memorial and Gift Fund | The Memorial and Gift Fund, the fore-runner of Foundation is our longest-running program. | |
| Honour Roll Program | The HonourRoll Program is our most beneficial program in terms of fund building endeavour. | |
| Affinity Pin Program | The Affinity Pin Program provides an opportunity for personal recognition or participation, our donors are published and encouraged to wear the Infinity Pin, a symbol of lasting commitment. | |
| Funding | Funding, based on receipted donations, is provided annually to CPS, essentially an entitlement and a legal requirement. Additional funding is frequently provided to CPS as grants, at the discretion of Foundation Directors, for such grants do impede the rate of fund enrichment. Recent participation in CPS projects has provided: • $2,250 for Maritime Radio CDs.• $9,100 for the English and French Plotting and Labeling Manuals, • $8,500 for Flare DVD Setup Costs and • $16,000 to purchase the Orion Passive Flare Safety Training Kits supplied to all squadrons at a nominal cost but subject to recovery by CPS. This $36,850.00 brings the Foundation Support for CPS to $160,000.00 + over the 33 year life of Foundation wherein it amassed $700,000.00 + |
